Official Places To Start
California does not use one contact point for all inmate and jail records. The right office depends on whether the person is in local jail, state prison, federal custody, immigration detention, a court case, or a notification system.
- State prison or CDCR custody: use CIRIS and CDCR contact or public-records channels.
- CDCR public records: use the CDCR Public Records Portal linked from CDCR Contact.
- County jail booking or roster records: choose the county in the County Directory.
- Facility-specific questions: use the Facility Directory to identify the facility row and custody type.
- Federal custody: use the BOP inmate locator.
- Immigration detention: use ICE ODLS, then ERO or facility contact if the online search is not enough.
- Court records after arrest: contact the superior court in the county where the case was filed, or use re:SearchCA where the court participates.
- Victim or custody-status notification: use California VINE, CDCR Victim Services, or local victim-witness channels.
What Not To Send
Do not send this site requests to release a person, correct an official record, remove a mugshot, change a court date, calculate a release date, add money, deliver a message to an incarcerated person, request a visit, or handle a warrant. Those requests require the agency, court, facility vendor, or lawyer connected to the matter.
